DESCRIPTION: Approximately 6 - 10mm in length. A delicately attractive cranefly with a pale orange thorax that has a single dark stripe at the front. The abdomen is also pale orange and the head can be seen to be grey in colour. The wings have 3 obvious but small black marks. The black rings on the legs go nearly to the top of the femur, leaving pale knees. BEHAVIOUR: This insect can be found in mass numbers especially in heavily vegetated wet woodland. DISTRIBUTION: Widespread throughout Britain. HABITAT: Damp shady hedgerows, shaded woodland, around thick damp leaf litter and thick grassy areas.
